PET ADOPTION PROCESS & FEES
Adopt-A-Pet from the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs!
When you adopt from the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs, you receive a healthy, loving companion that has had all preliminary inoculations except rabies, is spayed or neutered, has a tag, collar and microchip for ID and is eligible for a free checkup with a local veterinarian. We endeavor to have our veterinarian partners inoculate for rabies prior to adoption.

Adoption Process
Before adopting a pet, you will need to fill out a Pre-Adoption Questionnaire. The purpose of the questionnaire is to help us match your needs with the pets that are available. To simplify the process, you can print out the Pre-Adoption Questionnaire, complete it and bring it with you when you go to the Humane Society to look at pets. Alternatively, you may send an email to adoptionapps@humanesociety.biz and in return, you will get an email form to fill out and reply to which will then be processed.

When you visit the Humane Society, our staff will show you the animals available and fill you in on the history and needs of each animal. You can ask the staff questions about house training, scratching, veterinary care, how to introduce a new pet to other pets and anything else you can think of.

In order to complete the adoption, you will be asked to provide three personal references and contact information of your veterinarian. Home Visit is required for anyone adopting within Archuleta County. A Home Visit is our way of helping you to a successful "Pets for Life" adoption. If you are a renter we will need to verify with your landlord before adoption can be completed. To finalize the adoption, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. If your new pet has not yet been spayed or neutered, you will not be able to take it home immediately.

Adoption Fees
The fee for dog adoptions is $110 and $175 for puppies under 6 months. "Lonely heart" (long term residents and seniors) dogs are available for 1/2 price adoption fee. The fee for cat adoptions is $50 and $75 for kittens under 6 months. (Half Off Cat and Kitten Adoption Fees in August 2023). When you adopt from the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs, you will get a healthy, loving companion that has received its preliminary inoculations, is spayed or neutered, has a tag and microchip for ID and is eligible for a free veterinarian checkup. The adoption fee is a great value.
