LOST & FOUND
|
The Humane Society makes every effort to reunite lost pets with their owners. Every incoming animal is checked for tags and scanned for a microchip. Stray animals become property of the Humane Society after being unclaimed for five days.

To recover your pet as quickly as possible or to locate the owner of a pet that you have found, you should circulate a detailed description of the animal. Here are some guidelines to assist you:
- Check the Lost/Found Pets Pagosa Springs Facebook group page for lost/found pets in Pagosa. You should also list your lost/found pet in that group.
- Fill out the Lost/Found Report Form and call the shelter (the form will help you organize the information you will tell them). The shelter does not post these reports to Facebook.
- Use our Lost Pet Kit which contains a poster that can be filled out, photocopied and posted around town.
- For a lost pet, visit the animal shelter to check for it within five days of its disappearance. Stray pets are held for five days at the animal shelter before becoming the property of the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs. After that, continue to monitor this website and check out all adoptable pets. Occasionally people will feed an animal for days or even weeks before turning it in at the Humane Society.
- Strays coming into the shelter are posted at the front door to the shelter. If you call in your lost pet, the shelter will call if a stray matching that description comes into the shelter.
- If your pet has been microchipped by the Humane Society, call the
American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery hotline at 1-800-252-7894 and report your pet missing. (If your pet has been
microchipped elsewhere, call the appropriate national database.)
- If you have lost your dog (or cat), place a yard sign in front of your house with a photo of your missing pet and your phone number. People who find a dog (or cat) will often walk or drive around the area, trying to find the animal's owner.
- Notify your own veterinarian as well as all local veterinary clinics. People who find animals often call the veterinarian to report it, particularly if the animal is wearing a rabies tag which has the veterinarian’s phone number on it. Click here for a list of local veterinarians.
- Notify the KWUF Radio Pet patrol (264-5983) - they will broadcast the information at no charge to you. Also, call the Archuleta County dispatch at 731-2160 to report a lost pet.
- Place an advertisement in the Lost and Found section of the Pagosa Sun Newspaper (970-264-2100) or e-mail them (and other newspapers as appropriate). If you are giving a reward for a lost pet, Pagosa SUN will charge for the ad. If no reward, Pagosa SUN will insert a free ad for 1 week (up to 20 words).
- Prevent the heartache of losing your dog or cat by always having it wear an identification tag even if it has an identifying microchip. This is especially important when you have just acquired a new pet because it might wander off or get lost while adjusting to its new home.
